Something extraordinary is bubbling under the surface at Jumpers & Jazz in July, where Submerged is taking shape. This large-scale yarn art installation is the brainchild of the Yarntopians, the festival’s official yarn bombing team, dedicated to crafting immersive experiences of pure joy and escapism.
Festival-goers of all ages are invited to explore the mysteries of the ocean depths as they wander among glowing neon jellyfish, fantastical sea creatures, and hidden treasures, all crafted in vibrant knitting and crochet.
Submerged is the culmination of months of crafting by a passionate group of creative volunteers. Each year, the Yarntopians come together to create a new large-scale yarn art installation. Plans are shared in regular newsletters, with handcrafted pieces arriving from all over Australia. “Every contribution, large or small, plays an important role in realising our collective vision,” says Loretta Grayson, the team’s coordinator. “The commitment of our team members allows us to create Yarntopian magic year after year. We are very grateful for the wonderful contributions we receive.”
The work of the Yarntopians embodies the festival’s creative and collaborative spirit, demonstrating how art and craft can unite and inspire communities. Loretta adds, “The team’s goal is always to put smiles on the faces of festival-goers. Behind the scenes, our projects foster friendship, support and a sense of community.”
As anticipation builds for this underwater journey, visitors to the festival are encouraged to dive into the depths of Submerged and experience its enchantment firsthand.
The installation will be open every day of the festival (16 – 26 July) at St Mark’s Parish Centre, from 9am to 4 pm.
