Formed in 2007 and directed by Churchill Fellowship recipient Clint Allen, the UQ BIG BAND has become one of Australia’s most innovative jazz ensembles. Comprised of students and alumni, the band is known for their boundary-pushing performances, including works by Radiohead, Frank Zappa, and Björk. In 2014, they received rave reviews for The Other Side of MozART, a jazz-infused reinterpretation of Mozart’s works.
The UQ BIG BAND’s achievements extend beyond the Australian stage: in 2016, they toured the USA, performing in Los Angeles, San Diego, and New York. They made history as the first Australian big band to perform at Carnegie Hall during the New York International Music Festival and participated in workshops with jazz legends Vincent Gardner, Bob Mintzer, and Gordon Goodwin.
